Doxapram是一种呼吸兴奋剂。通过静脉注射，Doxapram会刺激潮气量和呼吸频率的增加。Doxapram刺激颈动脉体的化学感受器，进而刺激脑干的呼吸中枢。Doxapram诱导吸气前和吸气神经元电生理特性的改变。结果表明，呼吸活动的增强可能是通过对吸气前和吸气神经元钾通道的影响而诱导的，这表明了Doxapram的中枢作用。
